Social Design.

I offer a fully integrated social design service for my clients that puts real people at the heart of social design.

Understanding Social Design.

Social Design is the overarching term used to refer to the range of methodologies adopted by social innovators to tackle complex human issues. As a term it is being used more and more to describe a design process that makes a social issue the priority.

At Latitude, we refer to ourselves as social designers, using a range of interconnected methodologies that together help us to get to the heart of the problem and create positive impact over time. These include human-centred design and other approaches such as the pre-mortem, future design and many others. These methods run through our growing range of workshops and resources and ensure our own assumptions are challenged as we design our own approaches and interventions.

Human-Centred Design.

As a social designer I value the principles of human-centred design, so I allow these principles to filter through everything I do.

We focus on “real” people, their lives and reality

Why on earth do so many social interventions and initiatives fail to capture the insights of real people? Those individuals and groups who understand and experience the truth behind a social issue because they are living it every day? They are the experts. We might be great designers but we are nothing without seeing things through their eyes.

We look to solve “real” problems by getting to the root causes

We begin by exploring the root causes rather than the symptoms. Too often, society looks at a symptom as the problem but what sits at the heart of the issue? We start there and measure impact by monitoring and exploring the symptoms over time.

We appreciate that social issues are highly complex and deeply connected

Social issues are so complex that looking to intervene creates a dilemma. Will our interventions improve things or make them worse in the short, medium and long term? And, how will these actions impact others who are not so directly involved?

We start small, fail fast and learn quickly

At Latitude we use Lean Startup and Lean Impact Principles that encourage us to challenge our assumptions directly. They also help us to start small, giving us the manoeuvrability to pivot in a different direction to achieve our noble cause, whatever we are looking to achieve.

We follow the evidence

All over the world we have a plethora of sound research and evidence about what works and how it might connect. We use our skills as designers to bring this all together for our own work and for yours.

We curate

We all like to be called creative, but we believe that what we are really doing is curation. It’s the act of skillfully bringing together concepts, ideas, research and interventions and putting them together in powerful and meaningful ways.
